Datuk Chan Choon Ngai
Illicit trade takes quarter of Malaysia's cigarette market
One in four cigarettes consumed in Malaysia is either counterfeit or smuggled, according to a report in The Star quoting British American Tobacco's operations director, Datuk Chan Choon Ngai.
BAT is hoping that the government will impose only a moderate increase in cigarette excise duty this year.
Chan said it was difficult for the tobacco industry to thrive amid escalating fuel prices and in the face of smuggling.
Smuggled brands dealt a double whammy to the country, he added, because as well as not having local excise duty paid on them, they did not use locally grown tobacco.
Chan was speaking after a ceremony in which the deputy minister for plantations, industries and commodities, Senator A. Kohilan Pillay, had handed out RM178,000 from the BAT Foundation to tobacco growers' children who qualified for admission into institutions of higher learning. |
